Sketch models are an important part of the design process by using affordable materials to transform brainstormed concepts into real life models. For this challenge, the group was to build a device made primarily of paper products that would be used in a game of dodgeball. The device that was designed and fabricated by Bob's Builders included a foam coreboard platform resting on three cardboard tube axels with three wheels on each side. A basketball hoop resembling a duck was placed on the back of the device for aesthetic and tactical purposes. The hope was that opponents would aim for the hoop rather than the player. Each member of the group had to be able to pull each other member. This was tested the night before and our sketch model seemed to be a success. However, the night before the dodgeball game, a heavy snowfall hit Chicago, making it extremely difficult to pull our device during the game. It held up until the last round when the rope tore through the foam wheels and the group decided to remove the wheels. Overall, the sketch model challenge was a great learning experience that prepared students for the design and fabrication of the class' final project.
